चौदहवीं का चाँद हो // Chaudhavin Ka Chaand Ho

A Translation.

चौदहवीं का चाँद हो या अफताब हो 

जो भी हो तुम खुदा की कसम 

लाजवाब हो

Beloved, I cannot seem to decide

whether you are a fortnight-ripened moon,

or the iridescent noon-time sun,

but I will swear by this -

you are incomparable in every way.

ज़ुल्फ़ों हैं जैसे कन्धों पे बादल झुके हुए 

आँखें हैं जैसे मय के प्याले भरे हुए 

मस्ती हैं जिसमे प्यार की तुम वो शराब हो 

(चौदहवीं का चाँद हो…)

Your hair falls as softly
over your shoulders as a cloud,
and your eyes are intoxicating
as dark pools of wine. 

चेहरा है जैसे झील मैं हँसता हुआ  कवल 

या ज़िन्दगी के साज़ पे छेड़ी हुई ग़ज़ल 

जाने बहार तुम किसी शायर का ख्वाब हो 

(चौदहवीं का चाँद हो…)

Your countenance reminds me
of a quiet stream, and when you smile,
it is as though lotuses are blossoming
across its surface.
you weave sweetness into life's song,
and my love, you're a poet's dream.

होठों पर खेलती हैं तब्बसुम की बिजलियाँ 

सजदे तुम्हारी राह में करती हे कहकशां 

दुनिया-ए-हुस्नों इश्क का तुम्ही शबाब हो 

चौदहवीं का चाँद हो…

Lightning plays on your lips
as you smile, and you scatter
galaxies where your footsteps wander.

You are the epitome of all the 

beauty in this world, and so I ask you

once again - are you the moon,
or the radiant sun?
