वक्त ने किया क्या हसीं सितम // Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam

A translation.

Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam,

Tum rahe na tum, hum rahe na hum.

I am not who I was, and you have changed, too, 

and it is time's heavy hand that has hewn 

these changes, and I cannot decide 

whether they are beautiful, or terribly tragic.

There is a restlessness in my heart 

each time I see you now, a yearning 

I cannot explain, and it feels almost as 

though we never parted, and we're still 

traversing the path of destiny in togetherness.

Tum bhi kho gaye, hum bhi kho gaye

Ek rah par chal ke do kadam

I was not the only one who was lost 

and lightless, you were in the dark, too, 

and we traveled but a few steps 

hand in hand before we could not 

walk together anymore.

Jaayenge kahaan, soojhta nahin

Chal pade magar rasta nahin

Kya talaash hai, kuch pata nahin

Boon rahein hain din khwaab dum-ba-dum

We had started towards a destination 

neither of us could see, not knowing 

what we were in search of, not envisioning

the contours of the quest; all we could do 

was dream, and so we wove dreams into the

breath of each day, hoping, praying, 

that it would be enough to sustain this, 

and perhaps we'd survive the storms.

Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam

Tum rahe na tum, hum rahe na hum. 

Now, the changes in you and me
